Baby
Baby in 2019, above
-
Baby was born in September of
2012.
-
She was spayed and had her
teeth cleaned: January, 2021
-
Baby was in the house with us
for a while this winter, and was not finished with potty
training but was pretty good with "timed outdoor trips" and had
begun ringing the bell to tell us when she needed to go outside.
Normally, she has had a doggie door to freely go outside
through, but we wanted to see how she did with timing and
learning to ask to go outside.
-
Baby has not been a house dog
for most of her life. She has always had a climate-controlled
building to live in, with a doggie door to either an outdoor pen
or a yard or both.
-
She likes to walk and does not
pull on the leash.
-
She is shy around strangers
because we live on a farm, so she isn't exposed to anyone but
our family. She will gain confidence over time, as she meets
people.
-
Baby would transition best to a
farm/acreage, but should be kept fenced in for a couple months
while acclimating to her new location and bonding with new
people. A fenced-in yard would always be best for any dogs'
safety, however.
-
Baby has had no health issues or illnesses in
her lifetime.
-
Adopting an older/mature dog has pros and cons.
Puppies are very jovial, and adapt to new homes quickly. Older
dogs take much longer to settle in! They are less enthusiastic
about bonding with a new family, so you must be patient and
invest time in gaining their love and developing confidence in
their new homes and lifestyles. It can take a few weeks
or even a few months!
The benefits of not going through puppy chewing/destructive
stages, high energy puppy stages, and the longer-term potty
training are definitely to be appreciated when adopting an
older/mature dog. But, it's important to know that it isn't an
instant transition. If you are expecting a dog that instantly
loves everyone in your family, is 100% potty trained upon
arrival at a new home, or is otherwise a "turn key" pet, neither
a puppy nor a mature dog will be guaranteed to fit the bill for
you.

Although she is in her prime, and not a senior dog (or a rescue
or shelter dog), these web pages might still be good to look at
for tips and understanding about adopting a mature dog,
training, bonding, etc.
